|Senior Pastor's Greeting|
Before accepting the call to serve South Church as senior pastor, I was a guest who returned multiple times over a period of months to preach and break bread and share fellowship. So, I can describe this church from the vantage of visitor and "insider". From either perspective, I offer the following observations that I hope may beckon you to join us:
1. We are wonderfully human. I think that people seek belonging in communities of faith because they sense that personal progress (not perfection) is possible where the divine is present. Yes, we can help you with that! Meanwhile, you can also feel free to be exactly who you are and where you are on life's journey because that's what we're doing too. We are a down-to-earth people seeking glimpses of heaven as we walk and work and worship together.
2. We are exceptionally hospitable. We don't take ourselves too seriously. Yet, we are serious about extending the right hand of fellowship on Sunday morning at the front door, of course; and on any given weekday in the various circles where we gather to socialize or serve; and on special community events occurring all throughout the calendar year. We are always glad to make room at the inn, no matter the season. Hospitality is not an abstract idea at South Church. It is an authentic aspect of the character of this congregation.
3. We are guided by the Holy Spirit. I mean, we actually spell it out in our By-Laws: "We believe the Holy Spirit will create within us the strength to carry out God's mission as we receive it from [scripture and faithful prayer]." AND ... we live it out loud! We aren't afraid to rely on the breath of God to blow through and inform and inspire our plans and decisions and discussions concerning every aspect of church life. We trust that God can do for us what we couldn't possibly do for ourselves.
I could write more; but I will end this message by saying to you what Jesus said to the first disciples: "Come and see."
I pray that your reading online may result in our meeting in person.
Yours in faith,
